Andrew McConnell is one of my favourite chefs. He has created some of Melbourne’s best restaurant including Cutler & Co, Cumulus, Moon Under Water and Golden Fields and now is venturing into bars with the opening of Cumulus Up (stay tuned).

Golden Fields has become a St Kilda institution in just a year and a half. McConnell has used the years he spent working in Asia as inspiration for this modern and very trendy Pan-Asian restaurant. When you arrive it will be clear you are in for a great night as you will see the buzz of happy patrons through the floor to ceiling windows. The panorama of windows give way to a dining room with clean lines and precision design. The design features give the room an urban feng shui feel. Like the cuisine though the restaurant’s design has a few tricks up its sleeve. A golden roller skate among the Chinese nick nacks in the wall cabinets, vinyl records, chicken feet coat hangers floating on the walls, and gorgeous Aesop products in the washrooms.

I loved the fact that our meal was a gastronomic tour of Asia. We let the perfectly demeanored wait staff choose our meals and wines. This is always the best way to sample the specialties of the house and is a great way to try things you would not normally order. The staff in a good restaurant know their product and you are certain to enjoy the experience when ordering this way.

We started with beautifully dry-fried Japanese salted peppers, moving on to octopus with kimchi which was wonderfully spicy, flavourful and tender. Next snake beans in black bean sauce followed by the incredibly famous and always talked about lobster rolls. They do live up to all the hype. We followed this with duck on the bone which we shredded at the table and then filled into steamed buns along with cucumber and topped with vinegar or plum sauce. Another standout was the pork belly. I am usually not a fan of pork belly as I find it far too rich and fatty for my taste. McConnell has created a masterpiece with this dish and shaves the lean meat of the pork belly and rolls it in rice paper along with coriander and kimchi, simply superb. I also enjoyed the Szechuan braised eggplant, wonderfully spicy with a hint of pork. Dessert was a peanut butter parfait and a baked meringue. Both were excellent; one rich the other light and very sweet.

For those who are in search of a great Asian restaurant with attentive and charming service all in a modern and funky restaurant, this is your spot. You must try the lobster rolls and the pork belly. Golden Fields now take reservations and also do take away so if you can’t be bothered cooking….

Golden Fields is located at 2/157 Fitzroy Street, St Kilda and can be contacted on 03 9525 4488.

Queenstown New Zealand (New Zealand is also known in Maori as Aoteroa, the land of the long white cloud) is one of world’s hot spots for skiers, adventure seekers and those who want to get away from it all. Queenstown offers some of the world’s most incredible scenery and is a beautiful place to visit year round. Queenstown was originally settled by graziers in the early 1800′s. A gold rush in the 1860′s brought people from all over the world to this beautiful spot and the rest is golden history. Queenstown now counts itself among the world’s greatest resorts and has a tiny permanent population of less than 20,000 which incredibly hosts over a million visitors per year. Queenstown offers world-class skiing, mountain biking, hiking, four-wheel driving as well as New Zealand’s obligatory adrenaline sports. You will also find a large choice of accommodation, wineries, restaurants, bars, clubs and shopping in this scenic destination.

I was in Queenstown for a Les Clefs d’Or concierge conference (Les Clefs d’Or is the worldwide professional association of hotel concierges) and my week consisted of a great mix of activities, social outings and meetings. Our group of concierges travelled from all over the world to spend time networking and learning about what’s new in the hospitality industry and guest services. We all had a marvellous time and we were treated to some true Kiwi hospitality by some of the most genuine and welcoming people anywhere in the world. Everyone raved about the natural beauty of New Zealand and the genuine hospitality of our hosts from Les Clefs d’Or New Zealand. Our meetings in Queenstown afforded us time to unwind and to spend quality time with each other. The week could not have been a better success.

I stayed at the magnificently located Crowne Plaza Queenstown. The Crowne Plaza is situated right across the street from the main wharf in the town centre. The hotel has views of the city, lake, botanic gardens and the Remarkables mountain range. The hotel has the best concierge in the South Island; the Queen of Queenstown Miss Fiona Lawson. Fiona relocated from Christchurch after the earthquake and now calls Queenstown home. Her boundless enthusiasm and her exceptional local knowledge will ensure that your stay in Queenstown will be one you will remember for a lifetime. Fiona can help you with everything from day trip plans, to the wildest adventures. The Crowne Plaza Queenstown offers luxurious full service accommodation and conference facilities complete with 24 hour room service, restaurant and bar. All rooms feature a balcony with the very best views in town (rooms have either a courtyard or lake view). My tip is to ensure you have a lake view room as the view is spectacular. I spent many evenings out on my terrace enjoying a glass in New Zealand sauvignon blanc and taking in the majestic views of the city, mountains and Lake Wakatipu.

During my stay I ventured out for a couple of excursions including a wonderful day in the nearby historic town of Arrowtown. Established at the height of the gold rush Arrowtown now features several unique shops, art galleries, cafes and restaurants. I dined in the historic Stables restaurant as well as the Postmaster’s Residence restaurant. The highlight of Arrowtown was discovering the Provisions of Arrowtown Bakery and Cafe which serves the best cinnamon bun in the South Island. When in Arrowtown you must give this place a try!

Our second outing was a winery tour of the surrounding area featuring a stop at one of the South Island’s most highly regarded wineries Peregrine Wines. This winery has been forged from an old sheep station in the Otago region of New Zealand. The Otago region is famous for Pinot and Cabernet wines as well as some wonderful sauvignon blancs. Peregrine Wines have won several architectural and wine awards and is one of the most stunning wineries I have ever visited. The winery features several old buildings harking back to its sheep station heritage. The sheep shearing shed still includes the sheep chutes used to allow the sheep to exit the hut once shorn. Add to the historic buildings the architectural masterpiece of a roof fashioned after the wing of a peregrine bird (a native hawk of New Zealand) and you have a complex that is sure to please. The tasting room is equally as impressive with this dramatic room situated just in front of the barrel room. This impressive venue is staffed with friendly and knowledgeable staff that will walk you through the award-winning line up of wines. Wines can be shipped anywhere in the world and are available for sale in Melbourne at Vintage Cellars. The reserve pinots are well worth seeking out and are sure to impress.

My last and most adventurous outing was a four-wheel driving adventure around the central Otago region with Off Road Queenstown. Our guide was Hamish who is a fifth generation South Islander. Hamish provided us with information that only a descendant of an original settler could do. We learned of the resourcefulness of the early settles in New Zealand and of the many industries that helped to provide a living to its early inhabitants such as farming, fishing, cattle ranching and mining. Hamish took us from mountain peaks to river beds in our Toyota four-wheel drive. We were treated to vistas ranging from the Otago mountaintops to cliff-side wineries and the rolling hills of the Otago countryside. We ventured into riverbeds which are still being panned for gold and to cliff sides to view river gorges filled with crystal blue waters. The tour was one of the best days I spent in Queenstown and I would love to go out again on one of the other Off Road Queenstown tours.

One of my most pleasant and relaxing days in Queenstown was the day I took to wander around the scenic Botanic Gardens which are located on the peninsula near the town centre. The Botanic Gardens features a skating rink (great for ice hockey and skating), skate board park, lawn bowls club, tennis courts and a rose garden. The gardens provide the best views of the lake, mountains and township and a wander through the trails and gardens are a great way to spend a lazy afternoon. I recommend taking a picnic lunch and bottle of New Zealand wine or craft beer so that you can just relax and contemplate how spectacular this amazing country is.

Our conference was held at the Queenstown Convention Centre and the Skyline Centre. The conference centre is close to the international airport and can host large groups making Queenstown a unique and inspiring conference destination. Participants can work and play to a world-class standard. Our formal functions were held at the Skyline Centre. Situated on top of Bob’s Peak in Queenstown your evening begins with the adventure of a gondola ride up to the observation deck at the top of the peak. The centre is complete with banqueting and conference facilities. The view was without a doubt one of the most spectacular you will see anywhere in the world and the Skyline Centre was the perfect location for our gala dinner.

Our group also had a cocktail reception at the AJ Hackett Bungy Centre at Kawarau which is the first bungy jump in the world. The centre has a large indoor pavilion which was the prefect spot to set up a DJ and party the night away. The night started with cocktails and one by one the more adventurous of our group flung themselves off the 47 metre drop to the gorge below only to be bounced back up by the bungy cord before again being hurled into the gorge below. Our group watched with fear and delight as bungy fever overtook the masses of concierges! Each concierge who dared to bungy was rewarded with a boisterous round of applause from the onlooking group of concierges. I must admit that the girls well outdid the boys on the night. Congratulations ladies you shone with the Kiwi spirit of adventure!

Queenstown offers a large variety of restaurants, bars and cafes to suit every taste and budget. My favourites were the Motogrill which served up great coffee, inexpensive and delicious breakfasts and lunches, all with a local flair for hospitality. The team at Motogrill were so much fun to interact with, no wonder this cafe is one of the local’s favourite haunts. Fergburger is another famous stop that is not to be missed. Pumping out burgers twenty hours a day this place rocks with energy and the burgers are well worth its famous reputation. For something a little more up-market Bella Cucina is a great spot for a wood fired pizza (the oven was shipped in from Italy). Bella Cucina serves up authentic Italian pastas and meals in addition to the pizza and I recommend you have your splurge night at this wonderful spot. Bellisimo!

I find myself back in Melbourne dreaming of the tranquil versus the adventure days of Queenstown. I am sure to return and enjoy this unique and world-class destination and I look forward to visiting my Kiwi friends again. Kia Ora, until we meet again!

One of the great things about Melbourne is that you don’t have to pay a fortune to eat well. Enter Cantina della Casa, open only two weeks this cafe/bar is already one of my absolute favourites. The cantina is the newest brainchild from the same people who brought you Bar Lourinha in Lt Collins Street (one of my favourite wine bars for great food, wine and service) and the restaurant Casa Ciuccio (located next door to the cantina).

The cantina (which can be loosely translated as “refreshment room”) is amiable from the word go. Super friendly staff, lots of choices for food and drink, indoor/outdoor seating and a modern decor with a whimsical latin influence, all situated on one of the hottest culinary streets in Melbourne; Gertrude Street, Fitzroy.

The menu comprises of beautiful salads (you can have your choice of three salads for a very reasonable $11), empanadas (pastry with filling), artisan sandwiches and home-made sweets to finish. Of course there are several libations to enjoy along with the excellent food.

On my first visit I had my choice of three incredibly beautiful salads comprising of tomato ricotta and basil, a chickpea and s’lish salad and a couscous cashew and parley combination. The staff mentioned that there are always several vegetarian options on offer so no worries for carnivore/vego groups of friends. The salads impressed me so much I returned the next day to sample a divine goat empanadas with aioli and the tomato salad as an encore. If you haven’t tried goat it is a wonderful meat extensively used in Caribbean and Latin cuisines. It is beautiful and well worth a try. The empanadas did not disappoint with flakey pastry and a rich meaty filling, perfect with the aioli.

This cantina can be easily tried without maxing out your credit card. It’s a perfect place to head out with friends for something to eat, some great wine or a few drinks. I know I will be back again and I am also certain I will be trying Casa Ciuccio which is the cantina’s sister restaurant located next door.

Cantina della Casa is open Monday to Friday 9am to 7pm and weekends from 10am to 5pm. The cantina is located at 13 Gertrude Street, Fitzroy and can be contacted on 03 9090 7870 or on Twitter @Casa Ciuccio.

Tucked away in Georges Parade off Collins Street is one of Melbourne’s newest culinary ventures, Brooks. One of the great things about Melbourne is many of the best places are ones you have to know about as they are often hidden in out of the way places. Descending the stairs into one of Melbourne’s few basement businesses alludes to the fact that you are about to experience something special. This sophisticated and contemporary space is just that and it’s not to be missed.

Our evening started in the bar, which is substantially stocked for any imbibers taste. The bar is clearly a very integral part of the restaurant and like the massive open kitchen takes centre stage. Unlike many restaurant bars this one will clearly do a booming trade independent of the restaurant. For me Brooks hits the mark as a great place just to pop in for a cocktail or glass of wine. Your sommelier Matthew Brooke is one of the best in the business and the wine list is suitably arranged to compliment the menu and to afford diners and bar patrons alike with a myriad of choice.

Brooks’ dining room has a sophisticated ambiance and is neatly sectioned with leather banquettes and classic table settings. The restaurant features contemporary art work and lighting which contributes to the elegant theme in the dining room. The result is an intimate and elegant space. The main dining room features a view into the grand open kitchen, which allows you to watch the chefs create the works of art that will end up on you plate. To complete your experience the staff offer a service style which is quirky and fun. Clearly the team is encouraged to bring their charm and unique personalities to work. This ensures you will experience genuine hospitality at Brooks.

Chef Nicolas Poelaert has always been one of my favourites and I first enjoyed his creations at Embrasse in Carlton. Nicolas’ creations can only be described as artistic genius as flavours, colours and textures combine to provide the diner with a feast for the eyes as well as the palette.

A few of the highlights of our meal was a vegetable medley created with almost thirty different types of vegetables, fruit, flowers, gels, purees and emulsions. These elements all came together to provide a dish that was reminiscent of a Picasso masterpiece. The flavours of this dish provided a new taste and texture experience with each mouthful. This is the first time I have ever taken a photo of the plate after finishing and I mused at how the remnants reminded me of an artists palette.

Another standout was the Morton Bay bugs beautifully presented on a bed of shiso oil which is one of the most intriguing treats for the eye, it was simply divine.

Dessert was extraordinarily presented with fresh berries, wafers, creams and ices. Again a masterpiece to behold and a delight to devour.

Brooks is located at 115-117 Collins Street (enter off Georges Parade) and can contacted on 03 9001 8755. The five course chefs menu is $80. My tip, check the bar out and if you like what you see return for dinner!

I was invited to Lau’s Family Kitchen by a great foodie friend of mine who also happens to be Cantonese. At his urging and heeding some great word of mouth from several other foodie friends I was very keen to try out this St Kilda restaurant icon.

Lau’s did not disappoint. It’s clear to see that many Melburnians also agree as both the 6pm and 8pm seatings were fully booked on a Thursday night. In fact you usually need to book weeks in advance to get a table.

Our host was Michael Lau and we allowed him to pick our selections including wine. As expected all the dishes were wonderfully flavourful and fresh. The service was attentive and friendly without being over the top; perfect. Lau’s combines the best and freshest ingredients and prepares them in a traditional Cantonese style however the chef adds a fresh and inventive flair to the menu. You will see many familiar dishes but they will all have a slight variance which makes the experience all the more exciting. This approach has clearly worked and the restaurant is still one of Melbourne’s favourites.

Our journey began with spring rolls, light and crispy with three varieties of meat, followed by dim sims again light and beautifully textured. Next was tender duck, then tooth fish which was so light and flaky I rate it as one of the best white fish dishes I have ever had. To follow tender beef, fried rice and then pork with the most unusual tangy sauce, delightful. Fresh fruit to finish.

Our meal was great value and far less expensive that some of the other top rated Cantonese restaurants in town yet with all of the flair and attention to detail.

My pick allow the staff to choose your meal for you and allow Michael to choose your wine.

A full dinner at Lau’s will cost about $150 for two plus wine. Not bad value at all considering the quality of the food and service.

Lau’s Family Kitchen is located at 4 Acland Street, St Kilda and can be contacted on 03 8598 9880.

Meet Mr Beer in Melbourne, Scott Dewar owner of Aussie Brewery Tours. Scott hosts day tours of some of Victoria’s best micro-breweries and I was lucky enough to join him on a tour of the Yarra Valley.

Our day started with the drive from the city to the Yarra Valley. If you have ever been on a tour out to the valley the drive (about an hour) is usually a bit tedious as really you just want to get there. Scott changed what could have been a boring drive into a fun one as he chatted away giving us the history of the world, beer style. He informed us that beer is man’s greatest invention of all time. We learned that beer created civilisation as we know it and that beer is the mother of all things great in this world. I have done a lot of tours in my time and I can’t say I haven’t had a more personable or fun tour guide in a long time. Scott’s tales of how the world is a better place with beer in it was not only interesting and informative, it was fun, hilarious in fact. We arrived in the Yarra Valley in what felt like no time at all.

Our first stop was the White Rabbit brewery in Healesville. Here we learned a bit about the process of making beer. It was a great chance for the group to get to know each other and for us to have a sample of each of the brews on offer before choosing a pint shouted by Scott! You see I told you he was a great bloke.

Next was off to Buckley’s brewery who are literally back yard brewers. A couple of guys, a shed and beer. What could be more Aussie than that. We again tried a couple samples and heard about how decidedly low tech processes here is. We of course heard the story about the infamous Buckley himself.

Lunch was at my favourite restaurant in the Yarra Valley, Hargreaves Hill. This is a micro-brewery with a gourmet restaurant to boot. Hargreaves Hill easily has the best lunch I have ever had on a day tour. The restaurant is one of the standouts in the valley. There were plenty of options, beef, fish, pasta and two great vegetarian options as well. I chose the fish and chips and it was delicious. Then of course there was the glamour beer event of the day the tasting paddle followed by you guessed it another pint.

Next stop was Punt Hill winery? Ok Scott had not lost the plot, he has just thrown in a cider option to mix things up. We sampled a few clean and crisp Napoleon ciders before heading off to our last stop of the day which is Coldstream brewery. Here we had our last pint along with a pit stop before heading off home to the city.

All in all a magnificent day that I would highly recommend to anyone who likes beer or for anyone who loves someone who likes beer and wants to shout them to a great day out.

Scott is charming, informative, funny and hosts a spectacular day full of fun and great beer.

My tip, just do it!
